Husky: I’m not coming back
Back in 2015 when I first moved to Berlin in the summer, I had my small suitcase and very little tools. I was working in a co work space on Flughafenstrasse called Zum Buro. It was a bold move for me back then to consider even directing my first animation. I had limited budget and tools, I was working in a co work space, so not the most ideal of locations. But I definitely had the drive and determination to make something of my own.
A few years before that I had been working mostly studios as a freelancer for motion graphics or occasionally for a friends music video. I had my own aspirations at the time and definitely could see a way of doing things my own way. I just hadn’t had that opportunity yet. I had developed the skills I needed to do a lot of the tasks myself, such as compositing and 3d animation. I had also developed building skills from my diploma, such as sculpture and set building. I was desperate to combine these at some point. I had learnt a lot from my friend Steven Spencer over at Nice Monster studios. He taught me a lot about film, directing and technically also. When I heard the band Husky play in Berlin, I just had to reach out to them about making a music video for them, the song had captured my attention.
I had a friend working at Embassy Berlin at the time, Florian Kreuzer. He was actually their manager and I finally got to meet them backstage. I actually remember feeling quite nervous about approaching them, I mean who was I? I didn’t have cool videos to impress them with. Anyway, they seemed keen after I pitched them an idea. I just made them an animatic which was super easy to make as the song provided the rhythm and the structure so well. I also didn’t really hold back on what I had planned to do. I had never done anything like before and it was on the thinnest of budgets.
But nether-the-less, Berlin is the best city to meet creative people, or just anyone who’s up for lending a helping hand. You can lure them in with a few beers. It was my first experience to distribute tasks and manage the project. I was super happy with the results given the circumstance, we had some mad set ups as we were restricted with space. The team we had in those few weeks, Gal who volunteered had his shirt off most days to find relief from the blistering Berlin sun. The co-workers weren’t very happy about all the movement and paint spraying, but after all we created such a lovely video that I am still very proud of. I don’t think anything beats your first music video experience. But things definitely got a lot easier for the next videos for sure.
